Marshall was born in Darwin and grew up in Lajamanu. He attended Yirara College in Alice Springs before moving to his parents country of Yuendumu. He comes from a family of artists and he paints his fathers and grandfathers stories of Water Dreaming, Seed Dreaming and Snake Dreaming. He lives in Adelaide but goes home to Yuendumu regularly. He is married to well known artist Justinna Napaljarri Sims.
